Daniel Rowlands on the Love of Christ for His Church

rowlanddLanguage slightly updated?

?Christ took our nature upon him that he might sympathise with us.??Almost every creature is sympathetic to its own kind, however ferocious to others. The bear will not be deprived of its cubs without resistance: she will tear the aggressor to pieces if she can. But how great the jealousy of the Lord Jesus for his people! He will not lose any of them. He has taken them as members of himself, and as such watches over them with fondest care. How much will a man do for one of the members of his body (like a hand or an eye) before he suffers it to be cut off? Think not O man, that you would do more for your members than the Son of God. To think so would be blasphemy, for the pre-eminence in all things belongs to him.

Yes, he is acquainted with all your temptations, because he was in all things tempted as you are. Are you tempted to deny God? So was he. Are you tempted to kill yourself? So was he. Are you tempted by the vanities of the world? So was he. Are you tempted to idolatry? So was he; yes even to worship the devil. He was tempted from the manger to the cross. He was a man of sorrows acquainted with grief. The head in heaven is sympathizing with the feet that are pinched and pressed on earth, and says , ?Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me???

(AP) ? Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who made a fortune as a health care executive, long opposed President Barack Obama's remake of the health insurance market. After the Democratic president won re-election, the Republican governor softened his tone. He said he wanted to "have a conversation" with the administration about implementing the 2010 law. With a federal deadline approaching, he also said while Florida won't set up the exchange for individuals to buy private insurance policies, the feds can do it.

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie held his cards before saying he won't set up his own exchange, but he's avoided absolute language and says he could change his mind. He's also leaving his options open to accept federal money to expand Medicaid insurance for people who aren't covered. The caveat, Christie says, is whether Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius can "answer my questions" about its operations and expense.

Both Republican governors face re-election in states that Obama won twice, Christie in 2013 and Scott in 2014. And both will encounter well-financed Democrats.

Their apparent struggles on the issue, along with other postures by their GOP colleagues elsewhere, suggest political uncertainty for Republicans as the Affordable Care Act starts to go into effect two years after clearing Congress without a single Republican vote. The risks also are acute for governors in Democratic-leaning or swing-voting states or who know their records will be parsed should they seek the presidency in 2016 or beyond.

"It's a tough call for many Republican governors who want to do the best thing for their state but don't want to be seen as advancing an overhaul that many Republicans continue to detest," said Whit Ayers, a consultant in Virginia whose clients include Gov. Bill Haslam of Tennessee, a Republican who didn't announce his rejection of a state exchange until days before Sebelius's Dec. 14 deadline.

Indeed, cracks keep growing in the near-unanimous Republican rejection of Obama's health care law that characterized the GOP's political messaging for the last two years. Five GOP-led states ? Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah ? are pressing ahead with state insurance exchanges. Ongoing monitoring by The Associated Press shows that another five Republican-led states are pursuing or seriously a partnership with Washington to help run the new markets.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope to use the law and Republican inflexibility to their advantage, betting that more Americans will embrace the law once it expands coverage. The calculus for voters, Democrats assume, will become more about the policy and less about a polarizing president.

"It shouldn't be complicated at all," said John Anzalone, an Obama pollster who assists Democrats in federal races across the country. Anzalone said Republicans could use their own states-rights argument to justify running exchanges. Instead, he said, "They are blinded by Obama-hatred rather than seeing what's good for their citizens."

Governors can set up their own exchanges, partner with Sebelius' agency or let the federal government do it. The exchanges are set to open Jan. 1, 2014, allowing individuals and businesses to shop online for individual policies from private insurers. Low- and middle-income individuals will get federal premium subsidies calculated on a sliding income scale. Eighteen states plus Washington, DC, most led by Democrats, have committed to opening their own exchanges.

The law also calls for raising the income threshold for Medicaid eligibility to cover people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line, or about $15,400 a year for an individual. That could add more than 10 million people, most of them childless adults, to the joint state-federal insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. Together, the exchanges and the Medicaid expansion are expected to reduce the number of uninsured by about 30 million people within the next decade.

A Supreme Court ruling last summer made the Medicaid expansion voluntary, rather than mandatory for states. At least eight governors, all of them Republicans, have already said they have no plans to expand Medicaid.

The complexity is obvious.

National exit polls from last month's election showed that 49 percent of voters wanted some or all of Obama's signature legislative achievement rolled back. Among self-identified independents, that number was 58 percent. Among Republicans, it spiked to 81 percent. When asked about the role of government, half of respondents said the notion that government is doing too much fits their views more closely than the idea that government should do more.

Before the election, a national AP-GfK poll suggested that 63 percent of respondents preferred their states to run insurance exchanges, almost double the 32 percent who wanted the federal government to take that role. And the same electorate that tilts toward repealing some or all of the new law clearly re-elected its champion.

That's not the most important consideration for governors who face re-election in Republican states. Georgia's Nathan Deal and Alabama's Robert Bentley, who also face 2014 campaigns, initially set up advisory commissions to consider how to carry out the health care law, but they've since jumped ship. But, unlike others, Deal and Bentley aren't eyeing national office.

Three Republicans who are viewed as potential national candidates ? Rick Perry of Texas, Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana ? were full-throated opponents. Jindal, the only one of the three who is term-limited, is the incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. In that role, he has co-signed more conciliatory letters to Sebelius asking questions to flesh out how the designs might work.

Republican governors also are feeling quiet pressure from hospitals and other providers.

Deal, the Georgia governor, offers the typical argument for saying no: "We can't afford it." But the law envisions the new Medicaid coverage more or less as a replacement of an existing financing situation that pays hospitals to treat the uninsured. The law contemplates cuts in that program, which already requires state seed money. The idea was that expanding Medicaid coverage would reduce "uncompensated care" costs.

"Some of those cuts were made with the expectation that Medicaid would be expanded and that hospitals would be paid for portions of business that we are not being paid for now," said Don Dalton of the North Carolina Hospital Association.

Dalton's Governor-elect, Republican Pat McCrory, said as a candidate that he opposed Medicaid expansion. Dalton said his industry is leaning on McCrory and legislative leaders, though he commended "their deliberate approach." Similar efforts are underway in South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri and elsewhere.

For Democrats, Anzalone said the framing will be simpler: "You don't want to take a 9-to-1 match? That's a pretty easy investment. These governors who aren't expanding Medicaid, they're basically giving taxpayer money to the states that do."

UConn men pull away from Washington

Associated Press

HARTFORD -- UConn coach Kevin Ollie signed a long-term contract Saturday, then walked onto the court to a standing ovation and watched his team improve to 10-2 with a fourth straight win.

"It was a good day in my life," said Ollie.

Shabazz Napier scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Connecticut over Washington 61-53 on Saturday in the final nonconference game of the year for both teams.

Omar Calhoun led UConn with 14 points and Ryan Boatright added 12 to help the Huskies to their fourth consecutive win.

Scott Suggs had 15 to lead Washington (8-5), which lost for the first time in five games.

UConn's win came hours after Ollie agreed to a new 5½-year contract worth just under $7 million. Ollie had been coaching under a one-season deal that he signed after taking over from Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun in September.

"We got excited for him, and we wanted to give him his first career win as UConn's new long-term head coach," Napier said.

Ollie said his legs were shaking during the standing ovation as the student section chanted his name.

"I was excited for the moment," he said. "I just never thought it could happen for a guy out of South Central Los Angeles, to be up here at UConn and be a head basketball coach." UConn held Washington star C.J. Wilcox to just five points on 2-of-12 shooting. Wilcox, who came in scoring more than 19 points per game, had scored 20 or more in three straight games and seven of the Huskies' last eight. He had scored in double figures in every game this season.

"C.J. had some looks that he normally doesn't miss," said Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. "A lot of his shots were contested early, then after that he had some wide open looks that he couldn't get to go down. But that wasn't just C.J. It seemed like it was the story of our team tonight." Connecticut held Washington to season lows in points and field goal percentage at 29.7 percent (19 of 64). Washington hit just 4 of 17 3-pointers.

UConn also outrebounded Washington 40-36. Connecticut had been outrebounded in 10 of their first 11 games by an average of over six rebounds per game.

"We were just trying to hit first," said Enosch Wolf, who finished with nine boards. "I was just trying to get every ball that I could. That was my mindset going in." Connecticut stretched a five-point halftime lead by scoring the first seven points of the second half to go up 38-26. Its 15-2 run was capped by a 3-point shot by Napier from the corner.

UConn pushed that lead to 14 on Omar Calhoun's layup with 15 minutes to play.

But Shawn Kemp Jr. had a layup, a dunk and a blocked shot to help close that gap to 48-44 and force a UConn timeout with 8:15 to play.

Washington stayed within five before jumpers by Boatright and Omar Calhoun stretched it back to nine with just over 3 minutes left and put an exclamation point on the game with an ally-oop dunk from Omar Calhoun to the 7-foot-1 Wolf.

A layup by Wilcox cut the lead to six with 32 seconds left, but Omar Calhoun hit two free throws on the other end to seal it.

"We worked hard the whole year just for (Ollie) to get this bonus deal," Omar Calhoun said. "He definitely deserved the extension, so I'm happy for him." Washington had jumped to an early 16-10 lead as UConn missed some early free throws, including four on one play.

Those were shot after Aziz N'Diaye picked up a technical foul for kicking Omar Calhoun after fouling him on a drive to the basket.

Despite the missed free throws, UConn went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a steal and double-clutch layup from Napier, to take a 21-16 lead.

But Connecticut missed all seven of its first-half attempts from 3-point range and Washington stayed in the game despite having both N'Diaye and Abdul Gaddy in foul trouble. Gaddy picked up his third foul with just under 4 minutes left in the half and ended up fouling out.

Washington trailed Connecticut 31-26 at halftime.

Washington fell to 1-2 in Connecticut this season. They beat Seton Hall and lost to Ohio State in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in nearby Uncasville in November.

They dropped to 2-13 in games played in the Eastern Time Zone under coach Lorenzo Romar.

UConn visits Marquette for its Big East Opener on New Year's Day, while Washington opens the Pac-12 season at Washington State on Jan. 5.

The game was played in front of a crowd thinned by a storm that was expected to dump more than eight inches of snow on Hartford Saturday evening.

Jim Calhoun, who retired in September, missed his first game this season, vacationing in Florida. Ollie said he tried to reach his mentor by telephone on Saturday to tell him about his new deal.

"I think he's on the 14th hole in Miami," Ollie said. "But wherever he is at, I know he's got a great big smile on his face."

Big leaps: Inspiration and blind faith lead to love, better jobs, greater happiness

PLEASE DO NOT SAVE CHANGES IN THIS VERSION TO THE WEB VERSION; THE PRINT VERSION IS SHORTER ON PURPOSE. Thanks!

Turning a dive into a dream. Planning a one-way trip to Alaska.

Marrying a girl you've seen 17 times.

Big leaps, all.

Readers share stories about the time they took a chance, a big one, and how they came out the other side.

(Spoiler alert: Every one of them says it was worth it.)

Lobster and a dream

Cyndi Robbins, Poland Spring

It?s December 2007. Mel Robbins, my husband of 33 years and business partner, has just died. One of his dreams was to have a ?lobster in the rough? restaurant at the Poland Spring Resort, our business.

An adjacent property, restaurant and boat rental place is for sale and (has) been for sale for a long time. It had had improvements but still needed a lot of work. It was known as the local hangout for drinking but not known for great food.

I took my friend Betty to see it. The restaurant was dark and dirty. I know she thought I had lost my mind wanting to buy it. I talked to friends like Peter Bolduc, who offered us for free a lobster tank so I could offer Maine lobster. I convinced John Piper, our wonderful chef, to help, and knowing that I had him in my corner, on April 7 we closed the deal.

John, Betty, Maddie and Tom and many more worked diligently to clean the place up, and in June we opened as a takeout place. Three days later I realized that wouldn?t work and we then added a waitstaff. Two weeks later we add a liquor license. Changes, improvements and daily challenges are the norm.

Five years later, Cyndi?s Dockside is open year-round, and I?m very glad I jumped the cliff. I'm blessed with customers and staff that have become my friends.

The wood life

Chris "Kit" Begin, Farmington

I?ve made several big leaps in my 55 years on this planet, but two of them rise to the top as life changing.

The first "leap" was picking up stakes in New Hampshire, getting married and moving to Maine in August 1981 . . . with no job, no house and $5,000 in my pocket. My dad had given me a parcel of land in New Sharon, and once here I began the process of building my dream house, a 24-by-24-foot log cabin in the woods. Dad gave me a copse of pine on his land in Rome, where we cut, milled, hand-peeled and then built the cabin (short version).

Our first winter we had no flush, shower or refrigeration, and the cabin ran off a single outlet. It was a long winter, but we made it and things improved each year after that, including two wonderful boys, now young men.

For the second "leap," fast forward 30 years. I have a great job in sales making six figures, lots of travel, fancy hotels, the best restaurants, planes, meetings, conference calls, telecommuting, trains to Boston and a nice paycheck every two weeks. Oh, I seem to have left out the "stress" part. This was not the life I had imagined 30 years ago when, as Louise Dickinson Rich said in the mid-1940s, I "took to the woods." (That first cabin had been sold years earlier.)

After several years of planning and wringing of hands, I left the security of corporate America on July 1, 2011, and chucked it all for a smaller house, a large garden and self-employment as a Maine Guide, and continued use of my sales skills as a real estate agent. I made a lopsided trade of money for time, and a year and a half later, life is as good as it gets. Time to camp, fish, hunt, go to camp, travel, putter in the garden and the wood shop, tap maple trees, visit with family and friends, and just wander, wonder and reflect.

He had me at moo

Kristina Gailloux, Peru

So the time I took a leap was when I was 18 years old. I was working at a local convenience store right out of high school and every day a guy would come in after he got out of work. He was just absolutely handsome. I would get red in the face and butterflies every time. After me telling his friends that I was just crazy about him, and them telling him, he called me at the store and we finally ended up hanging out.

(After) he showed me his place, I met his dogs and he mooed at some cows that we were driving by, he brought me back to my car. A week later, we were heading to my house for him to meet my parents for the first time and pack my stuff! We had been hanging out for a week and he asked me to move in and we are still together and now married with two children almost eight years later! He?s my best friend, and I just love him so much, and I'm glad I took that crazy leap of moving in with him, even though I only knew him for a week.

A new life? Why not?

Mark and Lynn Klinger, Auburn

The big leap? Try jumping off the Empire State Building and surviving. That?s more like what we accomplished in our move to Maine in 2001. While growing up and making a living in the Southwestern deserts of Arizona, Maine couldn?t have been any farther from our thoughts. Why would someone want to live in the snow and cold of New England?

That?s what we thought as we left our flight, returning from Portland to Phoenix, Ariz., after our vacation in August 2000. Unfortunately, we had been bitten by the ?why not bug.? Why not quit our jobs, sell the house, leave our families behind and start a new life at Sleepy Time Motel in Auburn? Sure we could do it, we thought. Move 2,600 miles and start life anew, work for ourselves and get out of the corporate world.

The fact that the motel was mostly a cash business didn?t help one bit. Banks laughed at us, SCORE advised us to run for the hills. ?You?ll be sorry,? they said.

So we did what any other adventurous, thrill-seeking couple would do. We sold our house, quit our jobs and moved to Auburn, seeking a new life in Maine. We found that Sleepy Time had a less than desirable reputation, just another hurdle for us to leap over in our quest for success.

Now, 11 years later, we have developed a great business, made many changes, new friends and have never regretted the ?leap? we took in getting to Maine.

Alaska or bust

N. Doepke, Greenwood

Itchy feet has been a blessing and a bane all my life. The thought of missing out on an adventure spurred me to take a leap in 1975 to the "last frontier" of Alaska. Single and 19, I had already traveled thousands of miles thanks to being in a military family. This trip would be one-way only and on my own merit. The '70s were still a wild time and to turn down an opportunity to see Alaska left me with only one choice ? go or regret it the rest of my life.

A girlfriend of mine had gone up about six months before and invited me to go and try my luck. My traveling mates were three guys I'd never met but were friends of my friend in Alaska. They were travelling to the "lower 48" to see the sites and would pick me up in Arizona.

When they arrived on Oct. 1 it was 95 degrees. When we arrived in Anchorage 10 days later, it was a balmy 35 degrees!

I had $25 to my name but didn't need to worry. Those guys were generous, and we had 10 days of lazy driving through the most beautiful lands in North America. Driving and surviving the Alaska-Canadian Highway is a feat to treasure.

Although I didn't make a big gold strike, didn't marry a rich pipeline worker or homestead, I did gain three precious gifts: my 18-month-old daughter and boy-girl twins in my womb. Parental kidnapping caused me to leave Alaska and seek the help of my family. Reuniting with my daughter worked out, and my twins were born in Arizona.

In the end, being able to spend six years in the pristine beauty and natural wonders of Alaska made the leap well worthwhile.

On the move(s)

Robin St. Jean, Eustis

I?m sure there are many women that have made a big leap for a man. I have made two. Lucky for me both were for and with the same man.

The first time I was 24 years old and madly in love with Steve, my boyfriend. We decided to move in together at the same time we were trying to get custody of his two children. We found a place, moved in and the kids moved in a month later. They were 4 and 6.

I had been living with my parents to that point and had never run a washing machine nor actually cooked a meal. My kids and husband still joke about the many meals I cooked that even the dog wouldn?t eat!

Twenty-four years later I agreed to sell our house in Auburn, pack up everything and move to our camp in Eustis with Steve, now my husband of 22 years.

I was working as a manager in a manufacturing plant in Lewiston that had recently been purchased by a company in China. Every couple of months came a new round of layoffs. It was miserable waiting for the next round and never knowing who would be next.

Steve proposed the move. He is in financial services and can work from anywhere as long as he has a computer and Internet service. If we sold the house in Auburn, we could pay off that mortgage and be able to put a real kitchen in Eustis. I could quit my job and we would live in our retirement home way before retirement age.

I loved the Eustis area, but I had lived in Auburn most of my life. It was terrifying. Moving two hours away from our families has not been easy, but I?m so happy I agreed.

Sometimes I sit there at night looking around and tearing up. To me it?s the most beautiful place on Earth, and we did it ourselves.

I will leap again with this man, anytime!

Learning experience

Carl Beckett, Mechanic Falls

Growing up, I hated school. I thought it was dumb, boring and a waste of time. Yes, you heard me right.

After I graduated from Brunswick High School in 1954, I worked in the paper mill with my father. At the time, I thought it would be my life's work.

In 1956, I won a sum of money at Lewiston Raceway. The next day, while leaving the bank, I met a friend. I told her I won some money at the races. She asked me what I was going to do with it. I did not know. She suggested, "Why don't you go to college?" I replied, "That's a great idea! How do you do that?" I really didn't know.

She told me to talk with the principal of Brunswick High School and he would help me. The next day I told the principal I wanted to go to college. He asked me what I wanted to be. Darned if I knew!

I remembered my friend was going to Gorham State Teachers' College and studying to be a teacher. What was good enough for her was good enough for me!

Imagine that! A school hater deciding to become a teacher.

In September 1957, I started college. I graduated in 1961 and started teaching. I was determined my classes would never be dumb, boring or a waste of time. In all, I had 28 years of wonderful teaching. I believe I was meant to be a teacher.

Maine to Montana and back

Lorraine Charpentier Jarden, Auburn

Forty years ago I left the state of Maine. It was a time in my life when nothing was going well for me, so I decided to go as far away from here as I could. I ended up in the great state of Montana where I met the love of my life, a real Montana cowboy and rancher, and settled down learning all the ins and outs of ranch life.

We had 400 Angus cattle, horses, chickens and one donkey who thought he was a cow when he went out to pasture with the cows, and a horse when grazing with the horses!

Life was good on the prairie and as the years went by we enjoyed the peace and quiet of ranching.

Donald passed away in 2010 and, although I had many friends, the urge to return "home" to my roots began to niggle away at my heartstrings.

During our marriage we vacationed in Maine quite often, and I began to view Maine in a different light. Having spent 40 years on the prairie where there are very few trees, not much water and lots of mud (it's called gumbo out there), I looked forward to trees, lakes and the ocean.

In July of this year, my brother, who lives in Poland, flew to Montana for a visit. His desire was to return to Maine by car. I saw this as divine intervention, packed up my car, tearfully said goodbye to all my friends, and returned to my roots where I know I'll live happily ever after!

Love on the open road

Mary Waterhouse-Spear, West Paris

I was a convenience store manager ? in all honesty, a dead-end job for me, nowhere to go. Money was very tight and it was difficult to make ends meet.

I had always played my kids' birthdays in the Megabucks, one six-digit number once or twice week at the time. In October 1994, I hit five numbers for a $1,000 prize. BIG money for me. I bought a VCR for the TV, my daughter and I adopted a pet cat for her. He was a wonderful little black kitty, and he brought us a world of joy for many years. I put the rest of the money away for an "emergency."

In 1994, at the age of 39, I took what I have always referred to as a giant leap and went off to professional driving school, a.k.a. tractor-trailer school. After making a deposit of $600 on the class (that emergency fund), securing a student loan for the balance and being assured that they could indeed teach me to drive a standard vehicle, off I went.

Every weekend for nearly six months, it meant an overnight trip to New Hampshire, rain, snow, sleet or hail, 10-hour days.

Each weekend was an adventure and a whirlwind of events. Looking back on it, I should have been scared out of my mind. It was a tremendous commitment, physically, financially and emotionally.

Little did I realize at the time, it was all a part of God's plan for me. He gave me the strength and the fortitude to achieve my goal, and not only did I gain great confidence in my abilities, not to mention a great increase in my income and job security, but it was there in that classroom that I met a wonderful young man with dreams of his own whom I would grow to love, Tom Spear.

We pooled our dreams together and set out on the highways of this great country in 1995. We married in 1998. Now it is our leap that we so fondly recall what brought us to where we are today. We highly recommend it!

Seventeen great dates

Bob Woodbury, Winslow

In July 1959 the St. Lawrence Seaway opened the Great Lakes to the world. I was on one of 28 U.S. Navy warships to sail the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes for the first time since the War of 1812, one of four ships to sail all five Great Lakes and one of two to go all the way to the end, Duluth-Superior Harbor, where my wife, Marion, picked up a sailor.

Actually we were in Duluth three days. I went out with her girlfriend the first night, her sister the second and her the third. We continued to communicate, then a year later, in July, she came to Maine on two weeks' vacation.

With my ship in dry dock in Boston, I took two weeks leave. My mom, dad and I wined, dined and showed her much of the state of Maine. She returned to Minnesota. I was discharged from the Navy in August. In October, I drove to Minnesota to marry her after we had been together a total of 17 days over a year and a half.

We celebrated our 52nd anniversary last October.

Leap of faith

The Rev. Doug Taylor, Lewiston

First of all, my whole life has been summed up by a simple phrase: "Go big or go home." Everything in my life has been radical, crazy, extreme and cutting-edge stuff. I went from living in the devil?s den to serving a savior overnight. I went from bar hopping to hopping up and down at church revival services.

My greatest leap of faith came when the most charismatic church services could no longer cut the cake for me anymore. No longer could a few choruses on Sunday crank my shaft, if you know what I mean. It was a make-it or break-it moment in my life. I was going to go forward or slip backward, so I decided to take a leap of faith.

I would forsake everything that most people strive for. I would sell my house in a nice residential neighborhood and move into a ghetto. I would go from living somewhat uptown to downtown. Most people try to go from rags to riches but I was determined to go in the opposite direction of what most might call success.

It became more attractive to me to preach in the streets then to preach in a pulpit. I started the Jesus Party inner-city outreach and traded in the stained-glass experience to help people with shattered lives. This leap of faith I took 18 years ago has made me rich in other ways. Sacrificial giving and self-denial for the sake of others is essential to my Christian walk with God. The people I have helped have taught me a depth of love and caring for people that I would have never been exposed to if I had just gone through the motions of a normal church service.

A final wish

Nicole LePera, Topsham

Back when I was taking vocal lessons with Virginia Davidson in New York City, I asked my Italian grandmother if she had any song requests. Much to my dismay, she asked me to sing "Panis Angelicus" and Schubert's "Ave Maria," two very challenging songs to perform.

When I played her the tape of my performance, she was moved to tears.

"I only want one thing from you," she said. "I want this recording to be played someday at my funeral."

I kept that tape under lock and key so that it would be safe for that special day. The evening before her funeral, I brought the five-year-old tape to the church, requesting that it be played over the PA system during the service.

"We don't have a PA system," the nun/organist informed me.

At that moment, I knew what I had to do. But how could I sing such challenging songs at my own grandmother's funeral without crying?

"Don't think of her as dead," the nun said to me. "Envision her out there in the audience, enjoying your song. Think of her smiling at you with pride."

I gathered every crumb of courage I could muster and stood up in front of a fully packed church. My relatives looked stunned, for they could not believe what I was about to do.

But they all disappeared before my eyes as I imagined my grandmother, sitting alone in the sunlit chapel, smiling at me. I opened my mouth and I sang. I sang with beautiful abandon. I sang with gratitude for her life and her love. And I sang without tears.

To this day, I do not know how I was able to take such a big leap of faith and honor my grandmother's final wish. But it was one of my greatest and proudest moments ? and somewhere deep in my heart, I knew it was one of hers, too.

(Not) singing the blues

Kevin Kimball, Lisbon Falls

When Mike Bray and I first hatched the idea of creating the Maine Blues Festival, we had no intention of doing anything more elaborate than having five or six blues bands perform in the Bray?s Brew Pub Bier Garten in one day and calling it good. We decided that we would feature Maine artists exclusively, and that all musicians would be paid for their performances. It was an experiment, and we wanted to keep it simple.

What we didn?t expect was that as word got out about our plans, more people and businesses in the Naples area wanted to actively participate. By February 2006 the festival had a full planning committee of volunteers, and had grown from one stage and a half-dozen bands to eight stages and over 30 bands.

The cost of this experiment was growing exponentially and becoming financially dangerous. Yes, we had sponsors, but we also needed to sell a ton of tickets just to break even. We knew the statistics: Most festivals financially self-destruct their inaugural year, never to be heard from again. Add to that the chorus of naysayers who insisted that we were guaranteeing failure by not featuring national acts as a ?draw.?

Despite the odds, the Maine Blues Festival was a success at the get-go and has been ever since. We have thousands of attendees every year, we use our profits to routinely fund area education programs and scholarships, and we are already planning the eighth Maine Blues Festival in June 2013.

Married life

Joan Swindells, Lewiston

It was in the year 1949 when I walked into my first apartment as a married woman. I soon became a wife and housekeeper.

As time went on I became the mother of four.

That was 64 years ago. It turned out to be a very good leap.

New career

Barbara E. Richard

My big leap that paid off was going back to college at 38 years old. I went back to school to get my nursing degree. I was working, a mother and wife and going back to school! It is a decision I will never regret. I have been an R.N. for 11 years now and am happy to say this is what I wanted to do when I grew up.

It was really hard studying, taking care of family and home, and working part time during school. Financially, mentally and physically exhausting as that two years of my life was, I would not trade the friendships made and the opportunities that being an R.N. has brought me and my family.

I love being a nurse and really believe that this was the best decision of my life.

Senate renews warrantless surveillance act

23 hrs.

The U.S. Senate Friday voted?overwhelmingly in favor of keeping a?George W. Bush-era surveillance law that will allow continued warrantless surveillance of Americans for the next five years.

The Senate's 73-23 vote on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is an extension of the warrantless wiretapping law that grants legal immunity to telecommunications providers in order to continue to assist intelligence agencies with monitoring communications.

In addition to phone calls, text messages and emails may also be obtained by investigators for counterterrorism purposes, an easy assertion for law enforcement to make, Gizmodo reports.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, an Internet rights advocacy organization, claimed in a statement that the act "allows the government to get secret FISA court orders???orders that do not require probable cause like regular warrants???for any emails or phone calls going to and from overseas. The communications only have to deal with "foreign intelligence information," a broad term that can mean virtually anything. And one secret FISA order can be issued against groups or categories of people???potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans at once."

"Incredibly, the Senate rejected all the proposed amendments that would have brought a modicum of transparency and oversight to the government's activities," the EFF said?Friday?after the vote.

The bill is now headed for President Obama's desk where he is expected to sign it. Although an identical bill elicited contentious debate in 2008, a different political climate made passage much easier now.

"This is the last opportunity for the next five years for the Congress to exercise a modest measure of real oversight over this intelligence surveillance law," Sen. Ron Wyden,?D-Oregon, told the press before the vote. "It is not real oversight when the United States Congress cannot get a yes or no answer to the question of whether an estimate currently exists as to whether law abiding Americans have had their phone calls and emails swept up under the FISA law."

Wyden had introduced an amendment to the bill that would have forced the National Security Agency?to disclose how many Americans had been affected by FISA. Since 2009 the agency has refused to share that information on the basis that it would violate the privacy of those affected.?

Best Careers for the Future

What are the best careers for the future?

Rather than doing the usual ?Top 10 Careers for the Future?, I?ve decided instead to look at several broad career fields and highlight the better performing careers in each field.

Not everyone is cut out to be a doctor or an engineer, so we?ll take a look at a number of careers and hopefully you?ll find one that works for you.

Each career listed will include median pay level and projected job growth from 2010 through 2020. ?Source: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Occupational Employment Statistics

Healthcare

There are hundreds of fields within the healthcare industry, but let?s focus on the ones that have been around for a long time, are steady performers, and don?t require a multi-year stint in medical school to get started.

All are above the national averages in both income and job growth.

Registered Nurse.? Median income $64,690, 10 year job growth 26%
Pharmacist.? Median income $111,570, 10 year job growth 25%
Physical therapist.? Median income $ 76,310, 10 year job growth 39%
Occupational therapist.? Median income $72,320, 10 year job growth 33%
Dental Hygienist.? Median income $68,250, 10 year job growth 38%

Engineering

It?s almost a given that engineers of nearly any stripe earn far above average income levels.

However job growth rates in some sectors, such as nuclear- and industrial-engineers are below average, sometimes well below. ?Here are some of the engineering disciplines where income is high and future job growth is average or above. ?Bio-medical is well above average.

Petroleum.? Median income $114,080 , 10 year job growth 17%
Civil.? Median income $77,560, 10 year job growth 19%
Environmental.? Median income $78,740, 10 year job growth 22%
Bio-medical.? Median income $81,540, 10 year job growth 68%

Technology

Career Ladder

What career has the growth potential that?s best for your interests?

Like engineering, the technology field is diverse.

And also like engineering, some areas are seeing lackluster job growth. ?One such occupation is computer programmers, where future growth is projected to be well below the national average (which is why it isn?t listed below).

Here are the technology fields where both income and job growth are above average.

Computer and information research scientists.? Median income $100,660, 10 year job growth 19%
Network and computer systems administrators.? Median income $69,160, 10 year job growth 28%
Systems analyst.? Median income $77,740, 10 year job growth 22%
Software developers.? Median income $90,530, 10 year job growth 30%

The Skilled Trades

The skilled trades have the advantage that they don?t require a college degree, and the cost that involves. ?Some are projected to grow faster than the overall job market (electrician and plumber), while elevator repair and installation is slower growing but pays well above many college related careers.

Auto mechanics and aviation mechanics are not on the list because future job growth is projected to be well below average.

Electrician.? Median income $48,250, 10 year job growth 23%
Plumber.? Median income $46,660, 10 year job growth 26%
Elevator repair and installation.? Median income $70,910, 10 year job growth 11%

Education

Continues after Advertisement

Incomes are above average and growth is average, but education related jobs are consistent performers.

Teachers.? Median income $51,380, 10 year job growth 17%
College professors.? Median income $62,050, 10 year job growth 17%
School principals.? Median income $86,970, 10 year job growth 10%
School counselors.? Median income $53,380, 10 year job growth 19%

Entrepreneur

We may not think of having your own business as being a career but it?s increasingly common.

It may be the best solution to a job market in which promotions and traditional jobs are becoming difficult to find. ?It?s also fast becoming the next career move for suddenly unemployed mid-career professionals who find themselves shut out of their lifelong occupations.

Entrepreneurship is difficult to generalize; it can be any type of business from a painting contractor to a factory owner.

The internet is creating millions of opportunities for business ventures by lowering the cost of entry, opening up access to unlimited markets and enabling small start-ups to offer many of the same products and services as large corporations.

The opportunities for both business ideas and income here are unlimited.

Sales

The sales field is broad, and can include everything from common sales areas like real estate, insurance and autos to more technical ones, such as pharmaceutical sales and manufacturers reps.

In general, job growth is on par with national averages and pay can vary (widely) depending on both personal abilities and the product line.

We may not often think of sales as a career, at least not in the traditional sense, but income and promotion potential can be substantial for those who have a natural ability to sell. ?Good sales people often earn more money than salaried professionals. ?Many top level executives start out in sales and rise to the top of the company based on their sales performance.

Finally

No one has an accurate crystal ball. ?There?s no telling how the economy will change over the next decade. ?But having an idea of what careers are expected to have growth can help you decide where you should steer your career or education.

Do you know any other careers that would do well?

Three Afghans dead in new blast at U.S. base in Afghan east

KHOST, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed three people in an attack on a U.S. base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the same base where a suicide bomb attack killed seven CIA employees three years ago.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the eastern town of Khost, saying they had sent a suicide bomber driving a van packed with explosives to the base.

"The target was those who serve Americans at that base," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Afghanistan's NATO-led force said the bomber did not get into the base nor breach its perimeter. Police said the three dead were Afghans who were outside the base, which is beside a military airport.

The al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, widely regarded as the most dangerous U.S. foe in Afghanistan, is active in Khost province, which is on the Pakistani border.

After more than a decade of war, Taliban insurgents are still able to strike strategic military targets, and launch high-profile attacks in the capital, Kabul, and elsewhere.

Three years ago, an al Qaeda-linked Jordanian double-agent killed seven CIA employees and a Jordanian intelligence officer in a suicide bombing at the same base in Khost, known as Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It was the second deadliest attack in CIA history.

Afghan police official General Abdul Qasim Baqizoy, the Khost police chief, said no CIA agents were hurt on Wednesday.

Afghan authorities are scrambling to improve security across the country before the U.S. combat mission ends in 2014.

Besides pressure from the Taliban, U.S.-led NATO forces also face a rising number of so-called insider attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons on Western troops they are supposed to be working with.

On Monday, an Afghan policewoman killed a U.S. police adviser at the Kabul police headquarters, raising troubling questions about the direction of the war.

It appeared to be the first time that a woman member of Afghanistan's security forces carried out such an attack.

On Tuesday, Afghan officials said the woman has an Iranian passport and moved to Afghanistan 10 years ago. There was no suggestion that Iran was involved in the attack on the American.

Officials suspect she may have been recruited by al Qaeda or the Taliban, and had intended to also kill Afghan police officials.

Development of new corneal cell line provides powerful tool

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Human corneal endothelial cells (HCEnCs) form a monolayer of hexagonal cells whose main function is to maintain corneal clarity by regulating corneal hydration. Cell loss due to aging or corneal endothelial disorders, such as Fuchs dystrophy, can lead to cornea edema and blindness, resulting in the need for cornea transplants.

Studying human corneal endothelium has been difficult for cell biologists because limited cellular model systems exist and have significant drawbacks. The major drawback is that HCEnC cells do not divide and there is a limited source of these cells both for patient transplantation and for study in the laboratory. This field of study is now easier.

Scientists from the Schepens Eye Research Institute, Mass. Eye and Ear, have developed of HCENC-21 and HCEnC-21T, two novel model systems for human corneal endothelium. Their findings, "Telomerase Immortalization of Human Corneal Endothelial Cells Yield Functional Hexagonal Monolayers," are online in the PLOS ONE.

A research team led by Ula Jurkunas, M.D., developed first-of their kind model systems for human corneal endothelium.

"These models mimic very well the critical characteristics and functionalities known from the tissue in the eye," Dr. Jurkunas said. "They also fulfill essential technical requirements, e.g. indefinite number of and a high rate of cell division, to be a powerful tool. They will enable cell biologists to more reliably study human corneal endothelium in health and disease. The ability to enhance HCEnC cell self renewal and growth opens a new window of development of novel regenerative therapies for corneal swelling, hopefully reducing the need for corneal transplantation in the future."

Clippers beat Nuggets 112-100 for 14th win in row

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Los Angeles Clippers didn't finish their 14th consecutive victory well. They were good enough through the first three quarters that it didn't matter.

Jamal Crawford led a dominant performance by the Los Angeles reserves with 22 points in a 112-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night, extending the team's franchise-record winning streak while claiming the best record in the NBA at 22-6.

"It's about getting better and better," Crawford said. "We're trying to stay locked in and focused."

Matt Barnes added 20 points ? one off his season high ? as the bench outscored the Clippers' starters 64-48 in moving one win ahead of second-best Oklahoma City (21-6), which lost to Miami earlier Tuesday.

"This is fool's gold," cautioned Chris Paul, who led the starters with 14 points. "You don't play for the regular season. Obviously, you want to build something."

Kosta Koufos and Jordan Hamilton scored 16 points each for Denver in the finale of a Christmas doubleheader at Staples Center. The Lakers, who will play the Nuggets on Wednesday night in Denver, beat the Knicks 100-94 in the first game.

"They're a very good running team and they're very athletic, so we wanted to just play within ourselves and play smart throughout the game," Koufos said. "I thought we established ourselves early on. We were getting some good looks, but at the same time, shots weren't going in."

Ty Lawson added 15 points for the Nuggets, who fell to 7-13 on the road, where 22 of their first 32 games are being played.

"They've got the respect of the league and they've got the attention of the league," said former Clipper Andre Miller, who had 12 points. "It's tough to come in here and get a win when the team is playing that well."

Crawford's 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter pushed the Clippers' lead to 20 points and kept the starters on the bench for the final 12 minutes. Coming into the game, their average margin of victory during the streak had been 13 points and they exceeded that when the Nuggets failed to make it close in the fourth.

Crawford scored eight points in the quarter. He leads NBA reserves in scoring and topped 20 points for the 12th time this season.

But none of the Clippers were happy about the sloppy final period, when they were outscored 24-19 and the Nuggets shot 61 percent.

"It looked like a layup drill for them," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said about Denver scoring 10 straight points. "I'm big into making sure we play the right way. It's always about the big picture and us getting better."

Blake Griffin added 13 points and Willie Green had 11 among the other leading Los Angeles starters.

Denver rallied after halftime, using a 15-6 spurt to close to 73-63, capped by Andre Iguodala's free throw after Paul received a technical foul.

The Clippers answered with three consecutive 3-pointers, including two by Green from opposite corners, for an 84-67 lead. The Nuggets ran off seven in a row to get within 10 before the Clippers regrouped with a 9-2 run, capped by Paul's 3-pointer, that kept them ahead 93-76 heading into the fourth.

"They have a confidence right now that's pretty powerful," Nuggets coach George Karl said.

The Clippers stretched their lead to 67-48 at halftime with 42 points in the second, their highest-scoring quarter this season. The bench got things going with a 14-10 run before Paul replaced a wild Eric Bledsoe. His presence settled down the second unit until Griffin and DeAndre Jordan eventually came back in during a 28-10 run the rest of the period that produced the Clippers' first double-digit lead. Driving dunks by Barnes and Griffin, alley-oop dunks by Griffin and Jordan, and consecutive 3-pointers by Barnes and Paul highlighted the scoring binge.

"When we are at our best our starters have a great first quarter and our bench elevates that," Griffin said.

Hamilton banked in a jumper at the buzzer to give the Nuggets a 26-25 lead after a back-and-forth opening quarter. There were nine lead changes and eight ties, with neither team leading by more than three points.

NOTES: The Clippers improved to 13-3 at home, where they haven't lost there since Nov. 26 against New Orleans. ... Denver fell to 3-3 in the first game of a back-to-back set. ... Los Angeles wore all-red uniforms, while the Nuggets were in navy. ... Paul flew in 30 family members from North Carolina to enjoy the holiday. ... It was Paul's idea to have his teammates wear ugly Christmas sweaters to the arena, and his mother procured them. "It shows we're a tight-knit group," Crawford said. Some of the Clippers declared F Matt Barnes the unofficial winner. His green-and-cream cardigan had tinsel, bows and ornaments hanging from it. ... Kanye West was part of a contingent of Kardashians in the house, including Kim and Khloe.

LG's 2013 AV lineup puts NFC into Blu-ray player, 9.1-channel home theater

LG's 2013 home theater line includes NFCequipped 91channel surround system, Bluray player

LG is in the midst of a whirlwind tour of its 2013 CES introductions, and the next stop is its AV catalog. The running theme this year is NFC: both the BH9430PW 9.1-channel home theater and the BP730 Blu-ray player include the short-range wireless format to simplify mirroring content from your Optimus G (and, most likely, other NFC phones). The surround system also packs an iPod dock and a Private Audio Mode that funnels sound to a nearby smartphone when a quiet house is paramount. Beyond these two devices, LG promises the Bluetooth-equipped, 310W NB4530A sound bar, a ND8630 speaker dock with both Android and iOS support (including AirPlay and Bluetooth) and an NP6630 portable speaker that stuffs AirPlay, Bluetooth and NFC into its frame. We'll know more at CES next month, but those who want LG's overview can see it for themselves after the break.

White House: Obama likely to curtail holiday trip

KAILUA, Hawaii (AP) ? President Barack Obama is likely to cut short his traditional Christmas holiday in Hawaii to return to Washington as lawmakers consider how to prevent the economy from going over the so-called fiscal cliff, the White House said Tuesday.

Obama could fly back to the nation's capital as early as Wednesday, just five days after arriving in Hawaii, White House officials said. In the past, the president's end-of-the-year holiday in his native state has stretched into the new year.

Congress is expected to return to Washington on Thursday. Automatic budget cuts and tax increases are set to begin in January. So far, the president and congressional Republicans have been unable to reach agreement on any alternatives.

Lawmakers have expressed little but pessimism for the prospect of an agreement coming before Jan. 1. On Sunday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she expects any action in the waning days of the year to be "a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

The Obamas were spending the holiday at a rented home near Honolulu. On Christmas Day, the president and first lady Michelle Obama visited with Marines to express thanks for their service.

"One of my favorite things is always coming to base on Christmas Day just to meet you and say thank you," the president said. He called being commander in chief his greatest honor as president.

Obama took photos with individual service members and their families.

NBCDFW.com: White Christmas brings delays, cancellations to DFW airport

With 8 to 15 inches of snow expected across northern Ohio on Wednesday, United Airlines canceled at least 60 percent of its flights at Cleveland Hopkins Airport beginning at noon Wednesday, NBC station WKYC of Cleveland reported.

Numerous traffic accidents also stalled motorists across Texas and Oklahoma as drivers slid and crashed in a mixture of wind, sleet and snow. Twenty-one cars and tractor-trailers crashed in a massive pileup on roads coated with freezing rain in Oklahoma City.

"You definitely have to worry about everyone while you're driving, especially out here," Dallas resident Jerdal Whitaker told NBC 5 of Dallas. "We're not used to the weather that comes, especially when it's ugly, so you definitely have to drive slow."

With temperatures expected to drop into the teens, little melting was expected overnight.

Christmas storms spread snow, tornadoes across US, snarling travel

The Midwest was also heavily hit. A blizzard was forecast to end up having dropped 10 to 15 inches of snow on parts of Indiana, where road crews began work last Friday on keeping roads as passable as possible.

"We're hoping to make it there in time before that weather hits," said James Mason, who was driving home Tuesday to Missouri with his wife and three children through Indiana.

"We don't want to get caught up in it. That is when accidents happen and people get stranded," he told?NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis?during a rest stop in Plainfield, Ind.

The heavy snow spread into Kentucky, where state officials urged people to stay at home and off the roads.

"Try to avoid travel from, say, 9 or 10 Tuesday night through about noon on Wednesday, simply because the conditions are going to be so brutal," said Keith Todd, a spokesman for the state Transportation Department. "If you do go out, you ?need to be prepared like you're going to the North Pole."

In Ohio, the Transportation Department planned to have more than over 100 snow plows on the streets by 4 a.m. Wednesday.

The storm is forecast to hit the Northeast sometime Wednesday evening, bringing a mix of heavy sleet, snow or heavy rain, depending on its track.?

Motorists were warned to expect whiteout conditions in falling and blowing snow overnight Wednesday in the Buffalo area, where some locations could get as much as 14 inches by late Thursday, NBC station WGRZ of Buffalo reported.
